I like to have students help create the assessments. For example, if they are going to write a short story, then have them get into small groups to brainstorm what makes a good short story. Then, organize and create the rubric from their collective ideas and your input. When it comes time to evaluate, have them assess their own and that of their peers according to that rubric. This process makes them actively involved in decision-making, and I dare say helps them improve their writing.
